The NASCAR Cup Series weaves through Wine Country for the final FOX broadcast on the 2022 schedule. The Toyota/Save Mart 350 is the 16th points-paying race of the year and the final one before a well-deserved off week, the only one Cup has before a grueling 20 races in 20 weeks, taking us all the way through the season finale at Phoenix Raceway in November.

At Sonoma, what’s old is new again as NASCAR reverts back to the track’s shorter 1.99-mile course for this event. That, in combination with the sport’s Next Gen chassis, give this race a whole new look. Its length is now extended to 110 laps while the transition to the sport’s younger generation means roughly a dozen drivers never raced on this layout, last utilized in 2018.

The change also means “The Carousel” is replaced with “The Chute,” shortening the track and hopefully creating more side-by-side action at a track where passing had dried up with the old car.

“The Chute creates a little bit more passing going into [turn] four and also going down what I would call [turn] seven,” Kevin Harvick says. “I think that’ll fit our cars better.”

It’ll also make things tricky for drivers, who typically come off that turn wide but then have to get in line to avoid a wall that pops out at that section of the track as they accelerate off the curb.

The other key passing zone is in turn 11, right before the start/finish line, as the cars decelerate into a tight hairpin. It’s where we’ve seen plenty of contact in previous years and passes for the win, like Tony Stewart’s last-lap duel with Denny Hamlin in 2016.

As this roller-coaster year of NASCAR parity continues, Sonoma marks an opportunity for two previous kings of the road courses to claim their crown. Martin Truex Jr. will have former crew chief Cole Pearn making a guest appearance on the team this weekend, reuniting a duo that won here twice together (2018-19). But that June event three years ago marks the last time Truex has tasted victory on a track with left and right turns, falling behind the success of Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott ever since.

Even Elliott, who’s earned half of his 14 career wins on road courses, has struggled in Wine Country compared to Larson, the defending champion of this race. He’s never won here and hasn’t been victorious on a right-turn track since Road America on July 4 of last year.

Can they fend off Larson and more recent success stories on this track type, like Ross Chastain and AJ Allmendinger? Fans will be eager to see if that duo gets back up front to settle the score from a Circuit of the Americas finish back in March that went Chastain’s way. The ‘Dinger, in particular, enters the weekend with momentum after a NASCAR Xfinity Series win at Portland International Raceway and has nothing to lose as a Cup part-timer running for Kaulig Racing’s upstart No. 16.

Add in pit strategy during a 55-lap final sprint to the finish and the setup is there for fireworks down the stretch. We’ll see if a move back to that high-speed Chute is the spark needed to bring action back to what was one of NASCAR’s best racetracks during last decade’s pre-COVID era.

Scott Dixon won the pole position in last week’s qualifying for the 2022 Indianapolis 500, giving him the second-most pole positions (5) all-time behind Rick Mears (6). Dixon also recorded the second-fastest qualifying attempt in the history of the race. The 41-year-old won the Indy 500 in 2008, but he failed to make the podium in his other three tries from the pole. He is listed as the 4-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Indianapolis 500 odds at Caesars Sportsbook.

Dixon came in 17th place last year, but he has three second-place finishes to go along with his 2008 win. Should you be backing him with your 2022 Indy 500 bets? Before scouring the 2022 Indy 500 starting grid and making any 2022 Indianapolis 500 predictions, be sure to see the latest 2022 Indianapolis 500 picks from SportsLine’s proven projection model.

Developed by daily Fantasy pro and SportsLine predictive data engineer Mike McClure, this proprietary auto racing prediction model simulates every race 10,000 times, taking into account factors such as track history and recent results.

In the 2021 NASCAR season, McClure nailed Martin Truex Jr. to win at Martinsville for a strong 3-1 payout. Then, it called Chase Elliott to win at Road America for a 5-2 payout. McClure’s model also called Larson’s win at Texas for an 11-4 payout and his win at Kansas for a 9-4 payout in back-to-back weeks before nailing Larson to win the season-finale in Phoenix to claim the 2021 NASCAR Cup Championship.

In total, it nailed five of Larson’s wins during a historic season and has also gone 15-9 on its head-to-head matchup predictions to start the 2022 season. Earlier this season it was high on Ross Chastain to win in Austin, giving him a far better shot to win than his 40-1 odds implied. The model was also high on Joey Logano before he won as a 15-1 underdog at Darlington. Anyone who followed its lead on those plays saw huge returns.

Now, the model simulated the 2022 Indianapolis 500 (see tickets at StubHub) 10,000 times. Head to SportsLine to see the complete projected 2022 Indy 500 leaderboard.

Top 2022 Indy 500 predictions
One surprise: the model is high on Ed Carpenter, even though he’s a 22-1 long shot in the latest 2022 Indianapolis 500 odds. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The veteran had an outstanding qualifying race, turning in the fastest practice lap at the Indianapolis 500 in more than 25 years.

Carpenter’s 234.410 mph lap was the fastest practice lap at the track since 1996, and it is the eight-fastest ever at the Indy 500. He has plenty of experience at this track, finishing in second place in 2018 and in fifth place last year. Carpenter has completed 3,194 laps in Indy 500 competition, which is the sixth-most in history.

And a massive shocker: Pato O’Ward, one of the Vegas favorites at 17-2, stumbles big-time and fails to crack the top five. There are far better values in the 2022 Indy 500 starting grid. The 23-year-old Mexican driver debuted in IndyCar in 2018 and he’s made three trips to Victory Lane early in his IndyCar career and recorded top-six finishes in the last two Indy 500s.

However, he’s still inexperienced with just 43 career IndyCar starts under his belt and he’ll have to hope that the Hondas don’t link up and pull away early. Four of the six drivers ahead of him on the 2022 Indianapolis 500 starting grid are in Hondas and they’ll be likely to work together early. O’Ward is currently seventh in the 2022 IndyCar standings.

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the greatest Sunday in racing has come together. NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will be the cherry on top of a racing trifecta that includes Formula 1’s Grand Prix of Monaco (9 a.m. ET, ESPN) and the Indianapolis 500 (12:30 p.m. ET, NBC).

Both Monaco and Indy come into the weekend surging in popularity. Formula 1 continues to enjoy record ratings inside the U.S.; the Miami Grand Prix last month drew almost 2.6 million viewers, coming within striking distance of NASCAR’s 2.61 million watching the race at Darlington that same weekend. F1 will expand to three events within the country, minimum in 2023 as Netflix’s “Drive To Survive” remains the go-to motorsports-related show on streaming.

Meanwhile, over at Indy, seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson is raising eyebrows. After a two-year struggle in his move to the NTT IndyCar Series, Johnson qualified 12th for his first Indy 500 and has a legitimate shot to win the race. It’s the closest to an Indy-NASCAR crossover the sport has had in recent years after drivers like Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch used to attempt both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

That leads us to the third and final event on the day: NASCAR. It’s a series also enjoying a surge in popularity but one that faces a challenge with the Coca-Cola 600, a race that’s been a snoozer in recent years and now looks to be the weakest one within this trifecta. The longest race on the schedule, it used to be a test of endurance but now Charlotte is home to some of the worst aerodynamic issues NASCAR faces on any track.

Three times in the last six years, Charlotte’s 600 winner has led more than 300 laps. Last year’s race featured just one caution outside of stage breaks while only one driver failed to finish due to mechanical problems. At a track that should be a showcase for the sport’s recent success, the 1.5-mile oval has instead become the prime example of how intermediate ovals left the sport stagnant throughout much of the late 2000s and 2010s.

NASCAR’s Next Gen chassis, of course, offers hope the racing at Charlotte can be fixed. Positive examples this year include races at Auto Club Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway, fellow intermediates that produced some of the best events in their history in 2022. But there’s also Texas Motor Speedway and the All-Star Race last week, arguably the worst event of the year, and proof the Next Gen isn’t a catch-all.

A crown jewel event like this one brings out the best in the sport’s big teams and it’s no surprise the last six Charlotte races have been won by Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, or Team Penske over the past few seasons. But know occasionally there are upsets that do sneak through: Austin Dillon won the 2017 edition of this race on fuel mileage and Casey Mears did the same in 2007 for his lone Cup win.

Let’s see if NASCAR’s longest race can get its mojo back now that the greatest Sunday in racing is put back together again.

Who’s at the Front: Hendrick Motorsports
Their performance at the All-Star Race notwithstanding, Hendrick has clearly been the best-performing team through the first half of the 2022 regular season. All four drivers have won in the first 13 races, clinching a playoff bid while Chase Elliott leads the standings by 52 points over Ryan Blaney. What’s unexpected is their worst-performing driver is actually the sport’s defending champion, Kyle Larson. Larson sits ninth in points but someone who was at his best last season once the series hit its summer stretch.

LIVE/StrEam!.Food City Dirt Race LIVE Broadcast NASCAR ON 17 April 2022

The NASCAR Cup Series’ dirt race experiment continues for a second straight year with an Easter Sunday special at Bristol Motor Speedway. The 2022 Food City Dirt Race marks just the second time Cup has raced on dirt since 1970, its experiment continuing by pouring the brown stuff over the .533-mile concrete high-banked oval in Thunder Valley.

The honeymoon is officially over with year two. Now, it’s time to figure out whether racing dirt here actually works.

After the first Bristol Dirt Race produced mixed reviews, NASCAR added a little more progressive banking the second time around. When dust and glare from the sun subsequently caused visibility problems, they moved the race to a 7 p.m. start under the lights. The hope is the new Next Gen chassis will take to the dirt, allowing for better tire wear and handling than the crash-filled event held here a year ago. At least Mother Nature is cooperating. Rain is not a factor in muddying up the track or threatening a Monday postponement like 2021.

But, as Stewart Friesen noted this week once he tested at Bristol, “They’re purpose-built pavement stock cars trying to put a show on dirt so there’s a little bit of work to do. There’s definitely a lot of differences with that [new] car.”

Among the biggest from a typical dirt race, regardless of what car NASCAR runs is keeping the windshields intact on these vehicles. That alone frustrates reigning NASCAR Cup champion and expert dirt racer Kyle Larson, making him feel the sport is hesitant to go all-in.

“With us having windshields, they really can’t make the track as moist and as wet as it needs to be,” Larson told NBC Sports’ Zach Sturniolo this week. “They’re going to have to make it dry and have to make it get dusty and slick and all that. And it’s probably going to end up single-file around the bottom like last year and take rubber at some point just because we have to have the track dry so we don’t clog up the windshields or whatever.

“So I don’t know, we’ll see. Who knows? It’s going to be better than last year. I just don’t know if it’s going to look like a real dirt race yet.”

To that point, a lot of last year’s pre-race favorites with a ton of dirt experience, like Larson and Christopher Bell, were caught up in early wrecks and never a factor throughout the 250-lap event. In fact, the trophies throughout the weekend went to Martin Truex Jr. (Trucks) and Joey Logano (Cup), hardly the first two names you’d think of when it comes to past dirt experience.

In the end, throwing curveballs here seems part of NASCAR’s goal with this one-off, regular-season event held at a track whose attendance had sagged for the spring race in recent years. The unpredictable conditions could allow for a surprise winner to sneak up and steal a postseason spot; rookie Todd Gilliland, for example, posted top-5 speeds in Friday’s final practice session.

But there’s a level of unknown here more ominous than what we’ve seen so far with NASCAR’s new Next Gen chassis. The superspeedway racing at Daytona exceeded expectations, along with the intermediate track races that followed. However, the early trendline appears to be, the smaller the oval, the more this new car struggles as drivers can’t find a way to pass after closing in behind another car.

The hope is driver slip-ups that happen often in dirt racing should provide more openings for people to scoot by. Strategy will also be a factor with a number of cautions expected to clog up the final stage.

It’s a rare Sunday prime-time moment for NASCAR, which has a formidable sports competitor competing alongside them in the NBA playoffs. Can Bristol rise above the fray and deliver the type of dirt race that keeps this track type on the schedule for years to come?

As close as this season was to not coming to fruition, we are somehow here: MLB Opening Day. On Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET, the New York Mets and their estimated $277 million payroll will travel to Washington to take on Juan Soto and the Nationals.

The Mets did run into some odd injury luck with Jacob DeGrom out for at least two months and Max Scherzer pitching tomorrow. Odds according to BetMGM have the Mets as a slight favorite in this matchup. It will be interesting to see how Tylor Megill fairs in Thursday’s game. His fastball had some more juice on it during the spring, touching 97 MPH at times – much faster than his previous average of 94.6 MPH last year.

Whether you are new to betting on baseball or a veteran, be sure to follow the advice given by Furio Giunta from the

The buildup to Opening Day 2022 has been filled with unknowns and down-to-the-wire decisions for the Mets and Nationals ahead of their NL East showdown on Thursday, which was moved to 7:05 p.m. ET at Nationals Park due to inclement weather. How healthy will the Mets’ rotation be, both short- and long-term? Who will round out the Nationals’ 28-man roster amid injuries? These are just some of the significant questions that loomed leading to the

beginning of the regular season.

So here’s what is known: The Nationals are entering the first full season of the franchise’s new chapter since they overhauled the roster at last year’s Trade Deadline. With Max Scherzer and other veterans now playing elsewhere, 23-year-old MVP candidate Juan Soto is the centerpiece of a team that is bookended by developing, young prospects and experienced leaders. This is expected to be a season of getting healthy, establishing chemistry, ushering in a new wave of talent and building a foundation for years ahead.
