Brisbane Lions produced a ruthless display as they demolished North Melbourne last week but they have it all to do to maintain their 100% start to the season in this clash with Geelong Cats. The Lions have won all three of their games so far in this campaign and were 156-48 victors in last week’s annihilation. The Cats were also impressive winners last week thanks to seeing off the challenge of Collingwood and having won 11 of the past 13 matchups with the Lions, the home side have to be confident of success. This should be a thrilling clash between two quality teams but the Cats’ superiority in head-to-head meetings means they are the slight preference here.

Former Lions star Luke Hodge says Brisbane’s “next step” on the road to winning a premiership for the first time since 2003 is beating the Cats in Geelong.

The Lions have made a flying start to the AFL season, with their hat-trick of wins highlighted by last Saturday night’s 108-point thumping of North Melbourne at the Gabba.

With the 86th Masters fast approaching, the key question everyone’s asking is the same across the golf world: Who are you picking to win at Augusta National? With a tremendous field featuring most of the best professionals and a few of the top amateurs in the world, the first major of 2022 should be an epic ride from Thursday’s first round onward.

This year’s Masters is as wide open as any in recent memory. There is no favorite in the single digits this time around, and nobody has emerged as the player to beat over 72 holes. The favorites, technically, are Jon Rahm (10-1) and Justin Thomas (12-1) as they top the oddsboard on Caesars Sportsbook. Both have tremendous, competitive histories at Augusta National, but neither has claimed a green jacket as of yet.

The two hottest players in the world — Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler — are both nice picks but not considered heavyweight favorites at Augusta. Conversely, many of the top stars in the world have not won so far in 2022 and several of them have a dodgy history with this course.

Then there is the Tiger Woods conundrum. What do you do with a five-time Masters winner who has not played an official event in 17 months but also might know the golf course better than anyone who has ever played it? Woods indicated that he is indeed going to tee it up on Thursday morning alongside Louis Oosthuizen and Joaquin Niemann, and the potential outcomes for him might be wider than anyone else in the field.

Add it all up, and it would appear that we’re in for a wild Masters week full of unexpected twists and turns but also a lot of familiar names atop the leaderboard. The Demons now boast a ten-game winning streak stretching back to last season and they have to be favoured to maintain their 100% record in the opening stages of their title defence.

The teams in the Final Four are not exactly the teams the experts predicted would be still alive for the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. In fact only one of the teams in New Orleans in the NCAA Tournament is a No. 1 seed, but we still have ourselves a juicy cadre of contenders to win the national title. Combined, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Villanova are responsible for 17 NCAA championships, including nine since the turn of the century. It’s hard to script a better finish to the season.

Even better, Caesars Sportsbook oddsmakers expect the penultimate slate of this season’s games to be a doozy. No. 1 seed Kansas is favored by only 4.5 points over No. 2 seed Villanova, and No. 2 seed Duke is favored by only four points over No. 8 seed North Carolina.

And yet … our experts are close to a consensus on who will advance into Monday’s national championship game. North Carolina native Chip Patterson is riding with the underdog Tar Heels in the Saturday finale in a bold straight up pick, but for the most part, the rest of our team likes the favorites to win out as part of a chalky Final Four. The Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway is aptly named due to the NASCAR Cup Series manufacturer’s recent success. Joe Gibbs Racing Camrys have won eight of the last dozen races here; Martin Truex Jr. alone has won three of the past five.

If there’s any place JGR has an edge, it’s here, the beginning of the sport’s short track schedule. With Richmond, Martinsville and Bristol on the docket over the next three weeks, it’s an opportunity for them to reassert themselves as one of the sport’s main championship contenders.

“We have high expectations,” Truex said Saturday. “We have a lot of people at JGR that understand the track and understand what it takes to win here.”

What they don’t have yet is a full-on understanding of NASCAR’s new Next Gen chassis. Toyotas remain winless through the first six races and have just one of their six drivers (Truex) inside the top 10 in points. Denny Hamlin, coming off three straight Championship 4s, sits an uncharacteristic 22nd in the standings without a single top-10 finish.

I don’t think we’ve been through this, for sure,” Hamlin said of his recent slump. “I think you can catapult up the standings really, really quickly – the way things are … if you have a couple solid weeks where we don’t get crashed or cause a crash, those things add up.”

Richmond, one of the cleaner short tracks on the circuit, shouldn’t cause that problem even though it’s a more difficult car for drivers to handle. The last six Richmond races have featured no more than five caution flags, instead producing long green-flag runs more typically seen on a cookie-cutter intermediate.

Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race continued that trend as only one caution flag flew outside of stage breaks. JGR also dominated in that event, winner Ty Gibbs and John Hunter Nemechek combining to lead 249 of 250 laps.

Can Hamlin, Truex, Christopher Bell and Kyle Busch follow suit with a season-defining performance on Sunday?

“We’re starting over from our perspective,” Hamlin said. “We’re trying to find a point we were are good… we are decent, but we are not where we have been for the last three years…
